Days after a woman's severed body parts were found in gunny bags from different locations in Karnataka's Mangaluru city, police have arrested a couple in connection with the case.

According to The News Minute, the duo, Jonas Samson (36) and Victoria Mathias (46), who are residents of the Attavar area, were arrested and the prima facie appears to be money related.

On Sunday, 12 May, the mutilated body of Srimathi Shetty was found by a local fruit seller who later alerted police.

“The parts of the body were discovered around 9 am. On the highway, one bag with the body parts was found near the MRPL Petrol Bunk by a group of fruit vendors and the other bag was found near the burial ground in Nandigudda," police had told the media.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Shetty was a resident of Amar Alva Road and ran an electronic shop in Pandeshwar.

Speaking on the arrest, police told TNM that the couple had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from Shetty, of which only a part was repaid to her.

They further added that a day before her death, Shetty had gone to their residence and asked them to pay the money back.

“When we went to Jonas’ residence to arrest him, he tried to kill himself. We immediately took him to the hospital, the doctor has stated that the injuries are not serious.”
