A woman was raped, allegedly by a relative angry over a land dispute, in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, PTI reported on Sunday, 21 October, citing police.
Reports say an iron rod was inserted in the woman’s private parts.
What Happened?
The man accused of raping the 34-year-old tribal woman is her husband’s nephew. He was reportedly accompanied by another person who did not rape her, the woman said.
Police said the victim was raped on Saturday night, 20 October, near a pond close to her home in Niranjan Pat locality under the Dhupguri police station area. The woman's husband was not at home at the time of the incident.
According to the victim, the accused called her out of her home on the pretext of resolving the land dispute, raped her and tortured her by inserting an iron rod in her private parts, PTI reported.
Police said a rickshaw-puller found her and took her home. She was first taken to the Dhupguri hospital on Sunday morning, 21 October, and later shifted to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital.
The woman is said to be in a critical condition.
What Action Has Been Taken?
Soon after the incident, the accused relative and his companion were detained and are being interrogated.
The district police has been instructed to file a chargesheet in three days in connection with the incident, reported Hindustan Times.
