Woman Gives Birth on Makeshift Stretcher, Men Call it ‘Ambulance’

One of the men carrying the stretcher said they walked for nearly 5 km to get her to the closest dispensary.

In the absence of basic amenities such as a proper road or an ambulance, a woman in Assam’s in Udalguri village gave birth on a makeshift stretcher made of cloth and plastic sheet on her way to the Runikhata State Dispensary, on Sunday, 8 September.

One of the men carrying this stretcher, Bijoy Himbrum, said, “We called 102 many times, but they did not pick even once. The woman's condition was serious, which is why we had to do this.”

The other man, Madhwalahasta, sdded, “This is our ambulance.”

“There are no proper roads or a bridge that would make things easier for us. During the elections, they say that they will fix it, but they still haven’t done anything. Ambulance and auto transport are still unavailable,” he complained.

Himbrum said that they walked for nearly 5 kilometers to get her to the closest dispensary.

He also said that because it was raining as well in the morning, so they covered the cot with plastic.
