In an exclusive interview with The Times of India, American businesswoman and philanthropist, Melinda Gates, expressed outrage against increasing cases of rape and sexual assault on women in India, calling the present situation “horrific”.
Gates pointed to the increasing reports of rape of even toddlers and added that results from surveys conducted by her foundation confirm that domestic violence too is much higher than stated by the government.
One of the most powerful women in the world, Melinda Gates said it was important to empower women, and that it is seeing the light of day in India.
To see not just cases held up in courts but some of the prominent ones coming through with results, that’s what India has to do. I think civil society needs to keep putting the pressure on these issues and bring them to light.
