Bengal is boiling. Two people have been killed and four were injured in a bomb explosion in West Bengal. This is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have rocked the state in the past two weeks. The question is what is the reason behind the sharp increase in violence? Is there a breakdown in the law and order in the state?
Speaking to BloombergQuint’s Harsha Subramaniam, Saugata Roy, Lok Sabha MP, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) said, “After the election results had been out, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has thought that they have come to power here, they are creating mayhem and they are attacking Trinamool Congress workers.”
On TMC holding BJP responsible for the violence in Bengal, West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh mentioned that violence in politics is not a new phenomenon in Bengal. He further said that TMC does not have a line of thought and has no discipline.
Furthermore, he said that the BJP has not demanded for President’s rule to be imposed in the city yet but the situation is moving in that direction.
Meanwhile, commenting on the current scenario, Suvojit Bagchi, chief of bureau-Kolkata, The Hindu said, "Of course the BJP has built up immense pressure on Trinamool Congress. And TMC of course controls pockets in the state, it's still quite powerful in the Assembly, so they are retaliating.”
Violence Continues in West Bengal
At least two people were killed and three others were severely injured when bombs were hurled at them late Monday night in the Kankinara area of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, police said on Tuesday, 11 June, reported PTI.
The TMC claimed that the victims were supporters of the party and were targeted by miscreants hired by the BJP, a charge that was denied by the saffron party. The two deceased were identified as Mohammed Mukhtar and Mohammed Halim, police said. Three people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident, they added.
State Minister and TMC's District President Jyotipriya Mallick alleged that the victims were targeted by miscreants hired by the BJP because they had voted for the ruling party in the state in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
BJP MP of Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency Arjun Singh, however, rubbished the allegations, saying that the incident was the result of a family feud and has no connection with politics.
The incident took place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday at around 1 am in Baruipara, which is part of the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency, when family members of Mukhtar were sitting outside, officials said.
