A fifteen-year-old girl, who had consumed pesticide after being allegedly gang raped in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, died at a Kolkata hospital on Thursday, 29 August, Hindustan Times reported.
The girl, a class 10 student, was allegedly sexually assaulted by six local persons, including her boyfriend, on Saturday, 24 August, the HT report said.
Based on the family's complaint, the police have arrested four accused in the case, so far.
“Based on the family’s complaint filed on Tuesday we have arrested Biswajit Patra, Samir Mondol, Saurav Dolui and another juvenile boy for sexually assaulting the girl. They have also blamed her boyfriend for taking her out late in the evening," an officer of Kolaghat police station told news agency IANS on 28 August
The relatives of the victim, however, have claimed that the cops are trying to protect one of the accused - a brother of a civic volunteer - in the case, according to HT.
“We are going back to the village with the body (of the girl). We would block NH6 with the body and would agitate till the area Superintendent of Police comes to the spot and promises to arrest the brother of the civic volunteer without delay,” a relative of the girl told the publication.
The police told IANS that the incident took place on 24 August when the girl, along with her 16-year old boyfriend, went out around 7 pm in West Bengal's East Midnapore district. The family initially tried to talk to the boy's family and solve it through discussions.
According to the girl’s statement, the accused boys saw them in the deserted field and threatened to tell everyone in the village, the IANS report said.
"Two of the boys held her boyfriend while others took turn in molesting her", the officer said, as per IANS.
