In a video which went viral on Monday, 7 January, a district magistrate of West Bengal’s Alipurduar district and his wife can be seen beating up a young man at a police station, for allegedly posting derogatory comments about her on social media.
The magistrate, Nikhil Nirmal, was heard threatening to kill the youth in the video. The video, once shared on social media, evoked outrage in the online community and led to Nirmal being sent on leave by his superior authorities, News18 reported.
The young man being beaten in the video, has been identified as Vinod Kumar Sarkar, who had allegedly posted “objectionable content” about Nirmal’s wife, Nandini Krishnan, on various social media platforms, the report added.
Sarkar was arrested by the police on Sunday, 6 January, and brought to the Falakata police station. Soon after his arrest, Nirmal and his wife reached the police station and started to thrash him. Although Sarkar begged for forgiveness, the couple did not relent and Nirmal’s wife Krishnan could be heard asking the police officials for a “lathi” (stick) to beat him further, the report stated.
She also reportedly slapped and kicked him a few times. The beating continued, until a police officer took Sarkar away. The couple, however, did not file an official complaint at the police station.
