Before he leaves he says that the photographs are not for those who clicked them, but for the families of the jawans who prayed for his well-being. Cries of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ ‘DSC Corps Ki Jai’ and ‘1 Wing Ki Jai’ can be heard.

In the video the he is seen wearing IAF overalls with his Squadron’s patch on his chest.

On 27 February 2019, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s MiG 21 was shot down over Pakistani territory after an aerial dogfight. He was part of a sortie to intercept Pakistani aircraft which had entered Indian territory.

He landed near the village of Horran where he was captured by Pakistani authorities. He was returned to India two days later.

The IAF claims that the Wing Commander brought down a Pakistani F-16 before going down. Pakistan has denied this claim.
