UP Govt Approves 10% Quota Legislation, Renaming of Mughalsarai

Uttar Pradesh became the third state after Gujarat and Jharkhand to approve the 10% quota legislation.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday, 18 January, approved 10 percent reservation for economically backward among upper castes in jobs and educational institutions. The cabinet has also approved the renaming of Mughalsarai tehsil to Deen Dayal Upadhyay tehsil.

As reported by news agency PTI, the nod was given at a meeting in Lucknow of the state cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, senior cabinet minister and UP government spokesperson Shrikant Sharma told mediapersons.

Third State After Gujarat & Jharkhand to Approve Quota Legislation

Uttar Pradesh became the third state after Gujarat and Jharkhand to approve the legislation which has to be ratified by at least half the state Assemblies in the country.

The Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill, 2019, providing for 10 percent reservation in jobs and educational institutions to the economically weaker sections in the general category was passed by Parliament in its recently concluded winter session.

"The cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved the notification granting 10 percent reservation to the poor among the upper castes which has come into effect on 14 January," Sharma said.

“The UP government will implement the quota for the upper castes fully without touching the reservation for other sections of society.”

Mughalsarai to be Renamed

On Friday, the UP cabinet also approved the decision to rename Mughalsarai tehsil to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay tehsil, as reported by ANI.

Adityanath-led UP government has earlier renamed Allahabad to Pryagraj, Faizabad to Ayodhya and Mughalsarai Junction to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg Junction.

In an interview to India TV, Yogi had said, "More names will be changed. Whatever restores our identity, I will continue to do that. And there is nothing wrong in that."
