Possibly inspired by Kathua, residents of Unnao have come out in support of their MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, holding a rally on Monday, asserting his innocence, while also demanding an independent enquiry into the case.
The protesters alleged that their MLA was being made the eye of a 'political conspiracy'. Holding placards and banners that read 'Hamare Vidhayak Nirdosh Hai’, the protesting group was reportedly led by the Nagar Panchayat president Anuj Dixit.
CNN News18 quoted Dixit saying:
It is a political conspiracy to defame our MLA. He is innocent and being framed in false charges. We demand a neutral and independent enquiry into the matter.
The Unnao rally comes close on the heels of a similar rally which was held earlier this month in Jammu's Kathua, where a eight-year-old girl was raped and murdered. The police arrested eight individuals, of which one was a retired IAS officer.
The family members of the accused, along with the villagers, lawyers from the Kathua and Jammu Bar Association and members of the Hindu Ekta Manch, protested against their arrests, demanding a CBI probe into the case.
