In a shocking incident, a 27-year-old man repeatedly stabbed a 21-year-old student in Karnataka’s Mangaluru in broad daylight after she rejected his advances. The assailant then tried to take his own life.

The incident took place on Friday, 28 June, in the Derlakatte area of Mangaluru.

Victim Rejected Multiple Advances By The Assailant

The News Minute quoted the police to say that the accused 27-year-old, identified as Sushanth, was angry that the woman had rejected multiple advances by him, .

The two of them reportedly knew each other for three years from a dance class, but after joining an MBA course, she had maintained a distance from him. He had allegedly caused a ruckus at her college and harassed her there, after which a complaint was registered against him, which had angered him.

The entire act was recorded by onlookers in a video that went viral thereafter. According to the TNM report, the student was approached by Sushanth when she was walking back home from a bus stand. After what seemed like a confrontation, he pulled out a knife and started stabbing her, as she cried out in pain.

When onlookers shouted out to him to drop his weapon, he is seen turning the weapon on himself, daring them to come closer.

After some time, an ambulance can be seen in the video, from which a nurse along with two men are seen disembarking and approaching Sushanth. At this point, those videographing the incident can be heard asking the nurse not to go too close to him.

After the nurse speaks to him, Sushanth can be seen lying down on the student before both of them are ferried off by the ambulance.

‘Was Doing My Duty’, Says Nurse Who Approached Sushanth

Speaking to TNM, the nurse who approached Sushanth said “she was just doing her duty”, and was not intimidated by the situation in which she too could have been grievously hurt.

Nothing came to my mind when I saw the guy with the knife. I just stretched out my hand and asked him what his name was and he kept repeating, ‘It was a five-year-old relationship. It was a five-year-old relationship’, while constantly gazing at the victim.
The nurse, who did not want to be identified, to TNM

“A lot of people from the hospital balcony were screaming my name, asking me to be careful and stop. However, at that point, I was not thinking about anything. The mind does not work during such situations. I saw that the young woman had fallen down and my focus was on how I can rescue her. I didn't even realise that I was the one to rush in first”, she added.

The nurse is just 10 months into her job and said that she received news of the incident from passersby as she was doing her usual duty at the casualty ward of a local hospital.

Initially they thought it was a road accident, but soon it was clear that someone was being stabbed. It is then that the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the hospital asked her to get an ambulance ready and go to the spot.

The young woman is being treated for grievous injuries due to the repeated stabbing and her condition is critical. However, Sushanth is now out of critical care and has been admitted to the psychiatry ward.
