VK Sasikala wanted to be Tamil Nadu’s next Chief Minister. But now, she has to spend her time making candles at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara jail, serving the remainder of her sentence in the Disproportionate Assets case.
Let’s not underestimate her resilience, she did try to delay going to jail. First her lawyers filed a request to delay the arrest, citing health reasons. But Supreme Court Justice PC Ghose would have none of it!
Then she decided to do a Dil Chahta Hai-esque road trip to Bengaluru from Chennai, making a dramatic, ‘palm thrusting’ stop at Amma’s memorial, before finally arriving at the Parappana Agrahara jail, more than 24 hours after she had been convicted.
But before surrendering (or what she thought was ‘checking in’ at the jail), Sasikala put forth her list of demands.
- A separate room with TV
- Western commode
- Home-cooked food
- Mineral water
- Walking space
- 24 hours running hot water
- A helper
- A-Class barrack
- 24-hour medical assistance
- Place to meditate
The court heard her appeal and referred it to jail authorities, but jail time is a little different from vacationing.
She was given a cell that will be shared with two other inmates. She will not be given any VIP treatment. There is no AC room for her and her request for the home-cooked food, too, has been turned down.
According to reports, the Parappana Agrahara jail doesn’t even have provision for a VIP cell.
Other than this, she will be given a plate similar to the one provided to all other jail inmates. She will also have to wear a blue saree, which is the uniform for a convict – in effect, farewell to emulating Amma’s signature green sarees.
She will also have to put in labour and make candles... for Rs 50 a day.
Twitterati cannot get over how drastically her plans of becoming Chief Minister have derailed.
Here are a few of the tweets.
