In light of the communal tension that broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj on Republic Day earlier this year, local administration has denied permission to locals to carry out any procession on Independence Day.

Shiv Hari Meena, Superintendent of Police, Kasganj confirmed to The Quint that permission to conduct any rally – or tiranga yatra – in Kasganj has been denied.

During the Republic Day celebrations, a 22-year-old man, identified as Abhishek Gupta alias Chandan, was shot dead. That led to violence and arson across Kasganj.

The decision to not hold any rally has been taken to avoid fuelling any communal tension.

Section 144 Imposed in Kasganj

Ahead of Independence Day, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been enforced in the district.

No group will be allowed to carry out a procession or indulge in any new form of celebration on 15 August. School-going children, however, are allowed to hold celebrations, like every year. Basically, any new form of celebration will not be allowed in Kasganj.

“The aim is to curb any new such procession in Kasganj on Independence Day and not fuel sentiments of people. This has been done to ensure a peaceful environment in the district,” he told The Quint.

Security personnel have been deployed in Kasganj to maintain law and order, and over 100 suspected people are bound under Section 116 (3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), officials told PTI.
