Tamil Nadu Man Held for Posting ‘Beef Fest’ Invite on Facebook

A Tamil Nadu man was arrested by the Thanjavur police for posting an invite for a beef festival on Facebook, The Hindu reported on Wednesday, 17 July.

The man, according to reports, is the founder and president of an outfit called ‘Tamil Nadu Kudiarasu Katchi’ (Tamil Nadu Democracy Party). The post on his Facebook account advertised a beef-eating festival that will be held in Kumbakonam, without mentioning a date for the event.

33-year-old S Ezhilan, who also goes by the name of Ramkumar, had reportedly invited ‘kaavis’ (a reference to saffron outfit members) for the fest, saying that they'll be given a prime spot at the event.

Ezhilan has been booked under IPC Sections 298, 504 and 505 (2) which pertain to uttering words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace and statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes.

The message, according to the report was posted on Facebook, on 13 July, and an FIR was registered against him on a complaint by the village Administrative Officer.
