The District Secretary of BJP’s Women’s Wing Nellaiyammal slapped farmer activist P Ayyakannu after he was found distributing pamphlets that reportedly criticised the Central government.
A video of the incident shows Ayyakannu distributing pamphlets to people outside a temple near Chennai, when Nellaiyammal approaches the farmers, asking people to not take the pamphlets.
She then calls Ayyakannu a ‘fraud’, to which the farmer raises objections. Nellaiyammal then quickly slaps the farmer, triggering a tussle between the farmers and her.
In the video, Nellaiyammal is seen showing her slipper to the farmers’ group.
Onlookers are seen attempting to mediate the two groups, with both sides finger pointing.
A report by The Hindu claims that the tussle between the two groups lasted for a good ten minutes, before the police intervened.
The daily reported that Ayyakannu and his collective were engaged in a 100-day rally, which was flagged off from Kanyakumari earlier last week. The group has since been interacting with the public, distributing pamphlets to sensitise people on their demands for loan waivers and pensions.
Quoting BJP functionaries, The Hindu also reported that following the scuffle, Nellaiyammal was admitted in the Thiruchendur government hospital for a short while.
