Dr Kafeel Khan, who was suspended after the death of over 60 infants at the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur, UP, in August 2017, took to Twitter on Saturday, 15 June. He alleged that “In spite of a High Court and a Supreme Court order, Yogi Adityanath is neither paying my dues nor revoking my suspension.”
In his tweet, he requested the Indian Medical Association, which is protesting the violence against junior doctors in West Bengal and the state government’s inaction regarding the incident, to issue a statement on his behalf.
“I am also from your fraternity. I also have a family to feed,” he wrote.
He also attached a copy of a letter addressed to Ashutosh Tandon, UP’s Health Minister, requesting the payment of his suspension allowance.
A Supreme Court bench on 10 May 2019, according to ANI, had declined to interfere with his suspension but observed that he would continue to be paid suspension allowance as required by the law.
Earlier, the Allahbad High Court had granted Khan bail citing the lack of evidence against him.
Khan was briefly hailed by the media after reports that he paid out of his pocket to ensure the supply of oxygen to several children at the hospital and by doing so saved several lives. He insists that he was “a scapegoat” for what was essentially a failure of the hospital management.
