In an unprecedented move, four senior judges of the Supreme Court on Friday, 12 January, called a press conference, and said that the situation in the top court was "not in order" and many "less than desirable" things have taken place. Unless this institution is preserved, "democracy will not survive" in this country, they said.
They said they had written to Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, raising these concerns. Here are the key highlights from the letter, a copy of which has been accessed by The Quint.
