  • In what will come as a welcome move, the Supreme Court on Wednesday batted for transparency in police administration and directed all states and Union Territories across the country to upload a copy of the First Information Report (FIR) on the website of the state or police within 24 hours of the registration of the report.

  • However, it has exempted states and Union Territories that fall in difficult terrain by giving them 72 hours for the process. Further, exemption has been granted for sensitive cases involving sexual violence, terrorism and insurgency whose information cannot be made public.

  • The path-breaking judgement comes in response to a petition which claimed that uploading the FIR on the website will be in the larger interest as it will help avoid difficulties being faced by the public.
