Two Kolkata-based first-year college students, who were reportedly shooting an anti-suicide video on the rail-tracks on Monday, were killed when a fastly-approaching train ran them over. Their friend, who was shooting the video, suffered grievous injuries and has been admitted in RG Kar Hospital.
According to Times of India, Saisab Dolui (19) and Sunil Tanti (19), who were studying in the neighbouring colleges of Surendranath and Bangabasi in Kolkata, were reportedly shooting a short-film on the railway tracks near Sealdah station. Their friend, Shounadip Santra was shooting the video.
The film, says Bangalore Mirror, was part of an anti-suicide campaign, and the trio had wished to upload it on social media as an attempt to spread awareness on it.
The report adds that the students were so immersed in shooting, that they did not notice a fast-moving train approaching them.
While Santra managed to jump out of the train’s way in the nick of time, both Dolui and Tanti were crushed under the train. According to Santra’s statement to the police:
I was shooting the video while they were acting. They were sitting on the tracks while I was beside the tracks. Earlier when trains came, we moved away. But we failed to realise what happened suddenly.Shounadip Santra
According to the Times of India report, locals who lived alongside the rail-tracks, heard Santra scream and rushed to see him lying close to the tracks. By then, his two friends were already dead.
The report adds that the locals first called the cops and then took Santra to a Dum-Dum hospital, before he was later transferred to R G Kar.
According to Bangalore Mirror, both Doloui and Tanti were residents of Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Dolui's father, Shanti, a security guard at a private security agency, and Rajen, Tanti’s father, a welder mechanic, are shattered, the report adds.
Sealdah railway police superintendent Ashesh Kumar Biswas told Times of India that due to Santra’s present condition, they did not yet know about the exact sequence of events that took place at the rail-tracks.
However, the video clip shot on the cellphone, which was found close to the spot, showed the two victims sitting and chatting on the railway tracks, while the Santra was possibly shooting them. But only a detailed probe will be able to confirm the exact sequence of events. Our investigation is on.Ashesh Kumar Biswas told Times of India
