The Kerala High Court on Monday, 18 June, granted conditional bail to the three Rural Tiger Force (RTF) officials accused in the Sreejith custodial death case, ANI reported.
The three accused – Santosh Kumar, Jithin Raj and Sumesh – were denied bail by the the Ernakulam principal sessions earlier.
26-year-old Varappuzha Sreejith was arrested on 6 April 2018 on charges for abetment to suicide, followed by his subsequent death due to alleged custodial torture, that sparked major public outrage and brought the Kerala Police under the scanner.
On 10 April, the state DGP ordered an SIT probe, headed by Crime Branch IG S Sreejith, into Sreejith’s death.
Family members of Sreejith alleged that he was kicked multiple times, which led to a damaged intestine, The New Minute reported.
Sreejith, was accused along with 13 others in a case relating to the suicide of Vasudevan, a former CPI (M) member.
The Kerala government had earlier announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation to Sreejith’s family, including his mother, wife and two children.
