3 Soldiers Detained by Army Over Rifleman Aurangzeb’s Killing

The three personnel allegedly shared information about Aurangzeb who was abducted by the militants in June 2018.

The Indian Army has detained three personnel of 44 Rashtriya Rifles in connection with the abduction and killing of slain rifleman Aurangzeb who was killed by militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama in June 2018, reported The Indian Express.

The three men allegedly shared information about Aurangzeb who was abducted by the militants after he left from the camp to go back home for Eid on 14 June, the daily added.

Aurangzeb belonged to 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, and was posted at the 44 Rashtriya Rifles camp at Shadimarg in Shopian. His body was found in Pulwama hours after the abduction which led to a massive outrage in Kashmir.

Aurangzeb was conferred the Shaurya Chakra – the third-highest peacetime gallantry award – posthumously on Independence Day in 2018.

The three detained soldiers who have been identified as – Abid Wani, Tajamul Ahmad and Adil Wani – are facing an inquiry over their alleged role. Two of the soldiers belong to Pulwama while one of them is from Kulgam.

Speaking to The Indian Express, a defence spokesperson said that the details of the incident are being "ascertained".

The report further mentions that Abid Wani’s brother, Tawseef Ahmad, was assaulted by RR personnel on Monday, 4 February. According to the family he was called to the camp where he was beaten up.

He is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Srinagar.
