Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya was arrested on 26 July by the cyber cell department of the Mumbai Police on charges of online obscenity and outrage of modesty. The complaint was filed by Aam Aadmi Party National Executive Member and Spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon.
The fact that the singer was arrested was kept from both her and the media.
DCP Sachin Patil confirmed the arrest to Janta Ka Reporter and said that the Mumbai police have launched an investigation into the matter. He further said he will be able to “comment more after the probe was over”.
Menon had lodged a complaint against Abhijeet after he abused Delhi-based journalist Swati Chaturvedi on Twitter in July.
According to her tweets, Abhijeet’s phone was also confiscated and he was released on bail.
Menon also urged women to come out and speak up about any cases of online abuse. According to her, Abhijeet’s arrest is a “big step towards cleaning up social media.”
The case began after the singer was accused of giving a “communal” shade to the Swathi murder case in Chennai. He then abused Chaturvedi, following which, she filed a non-cognisable complaint against Abhijeet.
Chaturvedi also took to Twitter to appreciate Menon’s efforts.
