After being in the news for selfie stunts and accidents, Delhi’s Signature Bridge is now facing threats from vandals, who are stealing nuts and bolts from the cables connecting the pylon with the surface, a Times Of India report said. This could pose a security risk if unchecked.
Each cable rests on 12 nuts and bolts and, according to the report, a few of these were missing on Monday, 4 December.
The engineers of Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) were shocked by the incident and said that they will be welding the entire section to prevent such acts in the future.
“These parts were not missing earlier, this is an extremely shocking act. If sufficient number of bolts are removed, this seemingly simple act of vandalism can become a safety hazard. We will find a solution with stronger welding or by deploying guards.”DTTDC Official
Work is still pending on the upper sections of the bridge where a viewing gallery will be built, according to reports. Hence, the structure has not been handed over to the Public Works Department.
Authorities plan to close down the bridge from 11 pm to 5 am for construction purposes, the Times Of India report says. “For the time being, we are not stopping the traffic at night, but will be done if needed,” the official added.
The Signature Bridge has been embroiled in controversies since its opening on 4 November.
Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari was caught in a scuffle with Aam Aadmi Party supporters during its inauguration event. Recently, four transgenders were detained for stripping and posing for pictures on the bridge. There were also multiple accident deaths on the bridge in early November.
