At least six children, four girls and two boys, drowned during a Ganesha idol immersion at Maradaghatta village near Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) in Karnataka on Tuesday, 10 September.
While three of them died on the spot, the others lost their lives while they were being taken to a hospital.
The incident is said to have taken place between 2:30 and 2:45 pm on Tuesday. “A group of seven to eight children, aged between eight and twelve years, had gone to the muddy part of a pond nearby to perform the rituals of idol immersion,” Mohammed Sujeetha, superintendent of police, told The Quint.
However, no idols have been found thus far, Sujeetha said, adding that an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased children, ANI reported.
