After three deaths in two days in accidents on the newly-constructed Signature Bridge, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday, 24 November, appealed to the youth to "be careful while clicking selfies and not drive at a high speed."
With two accidents in two days, the newly-constructed Signature Bridge has become a death trap.
Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj, on the other hand, blamed the Delhi Police for its inaction in a series of tweets.
"What is the Delhi traffic police doing? Why were no traffic police personnel deployed to check over speeding at the Signature bridge? Is Signature bridge not under their exclusive jurisdiction?" Bharadwaj asked.
Biker Killed on Delhi’s Signature Bridge, Third Death in 2 Days
A 24-year-old man was killed and his cousin injured after their motorcycle skidded off the Signature bridge in Delhi on Saturday, 24 November, a day after two medical students were killed in an accident there.
The deceased, identified as Shankar, was drivng the motorcycle, and his cousin, Deepak (17), was the pillion rider, a senior police officer said.
They were coming from Nangloi and heading towards Northeast district. The Timarpur police station was informed about the accident at 8:20 am, he said.
Police said the victims where rushed to a nearby hospital, where Shankar was declared brought-dead while his cousin Deepak sustained knee injuries, they said.
Shankar, a resident of Ghaziabad, worked as a salesman and was unmarried, the officer said.
Deepak, a resident of Shalimar Bagh, told police that they were wearing helmets but Shankar's helmet fell off after skidding and his head hit the divider.
On Friday, 23 November morning, two medical students were killed after they fell off the Signature Bridge here after their sports bike rammed into a divider.
The Signature Bridge over the Yamuna river is double the height of Qutub Minar and was completed after a delay of over 14 years. The new landmark connects Wazirabad across the river Yamuna to the inner city and reduces travel time between north and northeast Delhi.
