Trinamool Congress leader Mohammed Sohrab’s son, Sambia, was allegedly drunk on the day of the accident that claimed IAD Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud’s life. The claim was made by Sambia’s friend, Johnny, who was with him before the accident.

Shanawaz Khan, also Sambia’s friend, who allegedly called the family soon after the accident, has been arrested. He had called to say that Sambia was driving the Audi Q7 that was responsible for Gaud’s death. He was following the Audi in his own car.

That day we all were drinking. There were four cars: Swift, Skoda, Audi and Fortuner. Everyone told Sambia that he had one drink too many. I told him he must leave his car, but he did not listen to anyone. Sambia fought with Sanu (another friend) and when he tried to stop him, he slapped him a couple of times. He overtook us and went off. Further ahead, the police stopped us saying that there was no entry as parade practice was on. When we protested that the other car just went by, they said that car would be penalised. So we took the other route and went home and slept. The next morning we heard what happened. We heard that the police was looking for us. We got scared and fled because a similar incident took place earlier.

CNN-IBN’s sources had said earlier that Sambia’s statement to the police had been inconsistent. He insisted to the police that he was at home on the day of the accident.

The arrest will be crucial for the Mamata Banerjee government, which came under severe criticism from the opposition, who alleged that she is shielding the accused.
