Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict Nalini Sriharan is sitting on a hunger strike for the second day from inside the Vellore Women's prison, her advocate P Pugalenthi told The Quint.
In a letter to prison officials, she said that she and her husband, Murugan, (also a convict in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination) have been in the prison for the last 28 years and want to be released early, according to news agency ANI.
She added that she has given multiple petitions to the state government requesting an early release.
Nalini was last released from prison on parole on 25 July for 30 days. It eventually ended after 51 days. In 2016, she was granted a 12-hour parole to attend the funeral of her father, reports ANI.
She also demands the withdrawal of Murugan from solitary confinement and alleges that he is being denied basic amenities in the prison, her advocate said.
He was reportedly put in solitary confinement after prison authorities found a mobile phone, SIM card and memory card in his cell recently.
Nalini and six others were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Gandhi was killed, along with 14 other people, In May 1991 by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Tamil Nadu.
