A trucker from Rajasthan paid a penalty of Rs 1.41 lakh after being caught for overloading by the enforcement wing of the Delhi transport department, news agency PTI reported, quoting an official.

An image of the challan, tweeted by ANI, identifies the truck driver as Bhagwan Ram.

The truck, having a Rajasthan registration number, was caught by the enforcement team on Thursday, the transport department official told PTI.

The driver paid the penalty of Rs 1,41,700, at Rohini court on Monday, he said.

After implementation of amended Motor Vehicles Act, the penalty for overloading of goods carriers has been hiked to Rs 20,000 with Rs 2,000 for each additional tonne, the official said.

Earlier, the penalty was Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 for each extra tonne.

Reports of hefty fines being charged have emerged from all parts of the country since the passing of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Parliament on 31 July.

Meanwhile, the BJP-ruled Gujarat government on Tuesday announced a drastic cut in the penalties for traffic violations even as the Centre is justifying the steep fine amounts under the amended Act.
