The Rajasthan government is considering levying a cow cess on liquor, ANI reported on Thursday, 7 June. According to sources in the government, the proposal is in the planning stages at the moment, reported Hindustan Times.
Final decisions on the types of liquor and the cess rate are yet to be taken, according to the report.
Rajasthan minister Rajendra Singh Rathore also said it was just a proposal and that the final decision would be taken by Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.
The proposal comes at a time when the Rajasthan government is considering doubling the surcharge on stamp duty for the protection of cows from the existing 10 percent to 20 percent, reported Hindustan Times.
According to the report, Raje had imposed a 10 percent surcharge on all non-judicial instruments, meaning that everyone making rent agreements, mortgage papers and lease agreements were required to pay some amount of money that was meant to go towards cow protection. This surcharge is in addition to the existing stamp duty on property registrations.
