1. Aadhaar for PAN, Rs 20 Coin & More: Key Highlights of Budget 2019

The Modi government’s new finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, tabled the Union Budget on Friday, 5 July, stating that the Indian economy is well within the capacity to reach the $5 trillion target in the next few years. In the second phase of PMAY-Gramin, 1.95 crore houses will be provided to eligible beneficiaries during 2019-20 to 2021-22. These houses will have amenities such as LPG, electricity and toilets. A new series of coins of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 20, easily identifiable to the visually impaired, will be made available for public use shortly. Read the full story here.

2. Haren Pandya Murder: SC Sets Aside Gujarat HC Order, 7 Convicted

The Supreme Court on Friday, 5 July, set aside a Gujarat High Court order which had acquitted 12 people accused in the murder case of former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya.

It restored the conviction of seven of the 12 accused, as adjudicated by a trial court before the Gujarat HC had overturned the conviction. The court also held no grounds for further investigation and dismissed the PIL filed by the NGO 'Centre for Public Interest Litigation' (CPIL) which has sought court-monitored fresh investigation into the killing and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000. 4. Overworked & Scared: Maharashtra Docs Continue Fight for Security

It’s been one year since 27-year-old Dr Atish Parikh, a third-year resident doctor from JJ Hospital in Mumbai, was brutally beaten by at least five family members of a patient. What did he do? He relayed the news of the patient’s death. The entire incident was caught on CCTV camera, and resulted in massive protests by doctors from across the state.
