8. Disclosure on Dalit Firing in 2012 May Harm India’s Sovereignty: Gujarat Govt

The Gujarat government feels that the disclosure of an inquiry report into the killing of three Dalit youths in police firing in Thangadh town in 2012 may incite hatred among sections of the society and harm the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

Sanjay Prasad, Principal Secretary at the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, has cited this as the reason for rejecting an RTI application to provide an inquiry report about the incident, The Times of India has reported.

In September 2012, three Dalit youths Pankaj Sumra (16), Mehul Rathod (17) and Prakash Parmar (26) were killed in police firing in Thangadh town when they were trying to control a clash between people of two communities.

After the incident, the state government had asked Prasad to conduct an inquiry. RTI and Dalit rights activist Kirit Rathod had filed an RTI application in January 2013 seeking copy of Prasad’s inquiry report but was denied.
