1. I Pumped 3 Bullets into Gauri Lankesh, Says Parashuram Waghmare

Parashuram Waghmare, the 26-year-old prime suspect in the murder of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh, has reportedly confessed before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that it was he who had pulled the trigger and pumped three bullets into the victim. However, the SIT chief B.K. Singh refused toe confirm the confession.

The SIT had arrested Waghmare on Monday, 11 June, from his home town Sindagi in Vijayapura district and took him into custody for 14 days. They interrogated him overnight on Wednesday, 13 June.

2. Ketamine Racket: 3 Foreigners Among 5 Held in Goa, Gujarat

Two British nationals and a Vietnamese were among the four persons arrested from Goa on Wednesday, 13 June, by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in a Rs 40-crore drug smuggling racket, which included manufacturing and supplying it to domestic and international markets.

Another key arrest was that of Ishrat Parmar, a native of Deesa in Palanpur, Gujarat. Ishrat had allegedly concealed ketamine in the consignment declared as chemical and exported it to Bangkok, said officials. He runs a hotel in Deesa and owns a BMW.

3. Ashram Caretakers Accused of Raping Three Minor Boys

Three caretakers of a children’s home in Kalamboli have been accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting three minor boys, aged 11, 12 and 17, since February. The Kalamboli police arrested two of the caretakers on Monday night, 11 June; the third has not yet returned from his hometown after summer vacation.

The boys’ parents, who are flower vendors from Nalasopara, could not afford to feed so many mouths, so they sent the three boys, who are cousins, to the Kalamboli ashram, which is run by a charitable trust based in Vikhroli.

The three boys study in private schools in Kalamboli in classes 5, 6, and 9; the 17-year-old boy has a learning disability.

4. Woman's Body Found in Bag in Car, 'Partner' Held

The body of a 26-year-old woman, who worked at a beauty clinic in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar, was found inside a trolley bag on the back seat of a car parked in Ghaziabad’s Khoda Colony late on Tuesday, 12 June. A blanket had been thrown over the bag to conceal it from view.

Police have identified the dead woman as Jyoti Verma, who lived in a one-room set on the top floor of a four-storey building at Vandana Enclave in Khoda. Shivam, who was staying with Jyoti, was arrested on Wednesday after questioning and charged with murder (Section 302 of the IPC) and destruction of evidence.

5. Four Robbers Attack Cash Van, Tie up Security Men, Flee with Rs 16 Lakh

Four armed men robbed a private cash van of Rs 16 lakh on Sion-Panvel Road in Mankhurd on Wednesday evening, 13 June. This came 24 hours after two persons shot dead wine shop-owner, Sajnish Singh Chawla, in Goregaon and fled with Rs 4 lakh.

The Securitrans (India) Pvt Ltd van did not have any armed guard even though it was carrying more than Rs 2 crore. The robbers, however, could not break open the lock of a trunk which had Rs 37 lakh, Mankhurd police said.

6. Duo Arrested for Stealing 16 ATM Batteries Worth ₹96,000 in Mumbai

The Tilak Nagar police have arrested two people for allegedly stealing 16 electronic batteries worth ₹96,000 from an ATM in Tilak Nagar.

The duo purportedly sold the batteries to a local scrap dealer for just ₹10,000.

According to the police, they were having alcohol and after they ran out of cash, they went to a nearby ATM, stole the batteries and sold them. The duo has been identified as Hitesh Dilip Bhostekar, 25, a driver by profession, and Rohit Prabhakar Dhuri 25, who does the servicing work of ATM machines.

7. Nirav Modi Used Revoked Passport Four Times to Travel: Interpol

The Interpol has informed Indian investigation agencies that absconding diamond jeweller Nirav Modi travelled four times between three countries as recently as March on an Indian passport that was revoked by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on 24 February, sources have told The Indian Express.

In a 5 June letter to Indian agencies, Interpol said Nirav travelled between United States, United Kingdom and Hong Kong on his Indian passport between 15 March and 31 March. According to Interpol, he travelled four times on that passport — on 15 March, 28 March, 30 March and 31 March.

8. UGC Gets 32 Ragging Complaints From Telangana, Followed by Andhra Pradesh with 98

Though there is a 75 percent increase in ragging incidents annually over the past five years, the University Grants Commission has received only 32 ragging complaints from Telangana state, the least in the south, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 98, according to the Human Resource Development Ministry.

Tamil Nadu reported the maximum number of ragging incidents at 165 in South India, followed by Kerala with 151 and Karnataka, 139. The total number of reported incidents of ragging increased 41 percent from 640 in 2013 to 901 in 2017, and 75 percent in one year from 515 in 2016.
