1. FEFSI Calls for Indefinite Strike from September 1
After the Tamil Film Producers’ Council refused to budge from its stand that it would not be forced to work exclusively with members of the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) union, an umbrella organisation of 23 film crafts, FEFSI called for an indefinite strike from September 1, after a meeting in Chennai on Thursday.
FEFSI president R.K. Selvamani said that the decision was taken after the Tamil Film Producers’ Council decided to put out an advertisement calling students studying visual communication and film-making in film schools across Tamil Nadu to apply for various positions for the roles of editors, cinematographers, make-up artists, costumers and other positions.

2. Minister Releases CD of Jaya Praising CM
Even as AIADMK factions led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and side-lined leader TTV Dhinakaran are engaged in a bitter battle for control, Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar on Thursday released two CDs containing videos showing the late Jayalalithaa praising Mr Palaniswami and warning her party members against having any business with “one family” (alluding to Sasikala).
In 2011 Jayalalithaa had expelled her aide VK Sasikala and over a dozen of her family members, including Mr Dhinakaran from the party. Soon after this, she alluded to Sasikala and her family members and urged the cadre not to have any truck with them.

3. Rain Brings Very Little Inflow Into City Reservoirs
Despite intermittent rain in the city in August, storage in the lakes has not improved significantly. However, this was enough for Chennai Metrowater to resume drawing from two waterbodies for water supply.
On Thursday morning too, the reservoirs recorded moderate rainfall. The Poondi reservoir received 41 mm, which is the highest volume among the reservoirs. Chembarambakkam too received 29 mm of rainfall. The consistent rain over the past month has boosted some storage in the lakes that went completely dry.

5. Rain, With a Mind of Its Own
This August was special for Chennai when it came to rainfall. Showers during evening or night was almost a daily affair. But, not all areas were lucky to get rainfall on the same day.
Weather experts say that it is typical during Southwest monsoon between June and September when thundershowers may deliver several centimetres of rainfall in one area while leaving another area, a few kilometres away, dry. On Wednesday night too, places around Sriperumbudur and Kancheepuram received 7cm of rainfall whereas areas like Nungambakkam got only 1cm.

A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State government to give up its decision to convert Veda Nilayam, the residence of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at Poes Garden here, into a memorial since the house had been allegedly used for several illegal transactions.
In his petition, V Thangavelu (44), an engineer hailing from Musiri Taluk in Tiruchi district but working in a private firm, claimed that the Supreme Court in its February 14 judgment on the disproportionate assets case against Ms Jayalalithaa had observed that several transactions had taken place at Veda Nilayam.

7. Cyber Experts, Police Suggest Ban on Game
After the Telangana State Gaming (Amendment) Ordinance 2017 banning online rummy in the State, those running online rummy games have shifted their servers to Chennai, the police believe.
This could be the reason for an increase in advertisements inviting people to play online rummy, especially on websites. Sources in the cyber police, and cyber experts, feel that Tamil Nadu should emulate the Telenagana government’s decision.
