1. India Weighs Response After 17 Soldiers Killed in Uri
In one of the worst terror attacks on the Army in Jammu & Kashmir, 17 Army personnel were killed and 20 left injured early on Sunday by four heavily armed terrorists, who sneaked into the administrative buildings and store complex of an infantry battalion in Uri, home of the 12 Infantry Brigade, near the Line of Control (LoC).
Within hours of the Uri attack on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the country that “those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished”, while Home Minister Rajnath Singh called Pakistan “a terrorist state” which “should be identified and isolated”.

2. Rise Above Politics to Tackle Menace: CM Arvind Kejriwal
Back in the city on Sunday after a throat surgery in Bengaluru, a visibly-subtle Arvind Kejriwal stressed on the “need for all to rise above political affiliation to tackle the mosquito menace on a war footing“.
“The past few days have seen much politics” on the chikungunya and dengue outbreak in Delhi, but the political sparring is meaningless as mosquitoes don’t differentiate between a Congress and a BJP supporter”, the Chief Minister said in a video message.
“Mosquitoes don’t know who belongs to which party. Leaving politics behind, all should come together to fight the menace, he urged.

3. Dad, Shivpal Wise Men But I am CM Till Next Polls, Says Akhilesh
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said the Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and elected party legislators will choose who will head the next government if voted back to power, saying “I am the CM till the next polls”.
Despite Yadav being still in the chief ministerial race, he sounded somewhat dejected in an exclusive interview to the publication in the aftermath of a bitter family feud, stressing that his father, Mulayam, and uncle, Shivpal, were more experienced than him.

4. Blast Jolts NY, Guv Says It’s terror, But Not ‘International’
A homemade bomb exploded in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York, on a busy Saturday night in what authorities said was an “intentional act” of terrorism.
Although there were no fatalities, 29 people were injured, and the discovery of an unexploded pressure cooker bomb soon after was a grim reminder of the terrorist attacks the city has repeatedly suffered.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo labelled the incident an “act of terrorism” but specified that there was no evidence yet of “international terrorism“.

5. Army to Turn on Heat, Asks Govt to Consider Cross-Border Strikes
The Army is going to turn the heat on Pakistan along the 778-km Line of Control (LoC) with concentrated artillery barrages, sniping and other operations, even as a section of the Indian security establishment wants the government to also consider “limited but punitive cross-border strikes” to send an unequivocal message to Pakistan.
But while “enhanced military pressure” along the LoC is a tactical move to impose some costs on the Pakistan Army, the government will have to take a considered decision on conventional cross-border strikes.

6. Shivpal Axe on Akhilesh Loyalists
State Samajwadi Party chief Shivpal Singh Yadav on Sunday suspended two loyalists of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and sidelined a third as the intra-family strife continued, despite Friday’s apparent truce.
Arvind Pratap Yadav, member of the legislative council, was suspended for unspecified “derogatory comments” against party national president Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is Shivpal’s elder brother and Akhilesh’s father.

7. Man, Accused of Hacking Infy Techie to Death, Commits Suicide
The man who was accused of hacking S Swathi, an Infosys employee to death at a railway station in July, was found dead in his prison cell in a case of suspected suicide on Sunday.
Preliminary reports said Ramkumar, a 22-year-old engineer, bit a live wire jutting out of a switchboard in his cell in Puzhal prison. He was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead, sources said.

8. Deploy More Doctors in Hospitals if Needed, Says Jung
Lieutenant governor (L-G) Najeeb Jung directed officials to deploy more doctors in city hospitals and fever clinics according to need to deal with the spurt in cases of chikungunya and dengue, which have claimed over a dozen lives this month.
Jung took stock of the preparedness of fever clinics, hospital wards and labs in Lok Nayak, Bara Hindu Rao and the GTB hospitals on Sunday.
The L-G’ s visit comes a day after a war of words with the Delhi government over his direction to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to cut short his Finland visit in the wake of the spurt.

9. Odisha Again: Tribal Carries Mother’s Body on Rickshaw
Less than a month after a tribal man, Dana Majhi, had to walk 12 kilometres with his wife’s body on his shoulders to reach his home from Kalahandi hospital, family members of another tribal woman, who died at Jajpur District Hospital, had to take her body in a trolley-rickshaw to her village on Saturday.
Pana Tirika, a 65-year-old tribal, was admitted to the hospital after she complained of stomach pain. As her condition turned critical, the doctors referred her to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, but she died soon.
