1. Streets on Fire After Water Tug of War

Cauvery protesters ran wild in Karnataka today torching buses and trucks and stoning cars and shops with a Tamil Nadu link. The violence left a young man dead in police firing in Bangalore and another wounded.

This was the worst violence in Karnataka after the 1991 Cauvery riots killed 28 people in Bangalore and prompted thousands to flee the city, while Tamil Nadu witnessed sporadic counter-violence by a few fringe groups.

Even hoardings carrying the picture of Tamil film actor Rajinikanth, who once worked as a bus conductor in Bangalore, were pulled down in Mysore.

2. On Eid, Curfew Will be Imposed Across Kashmir

Curfew will be imposed in all 10 districts of the Kashmir Valley on Eid in anticipation of the planned separatists’ march to the offices of United Nations. Mobile and internet services, barring state-run BSNL, have already been suspended for 72 hours in Kashmir. The decision to impose curfew throughout Kashmir was taken by the government to prevent any outbreak of violence.

3. On Id, a Year Old Scar Raises Questions

The scar of the three back-to-back brain surgeries starts from behind the left ear of Mohammed Danish, son of lynching victim Mohammed Akhlaque, and curls across his skull to end at the middle of his forehead, just above his left eyebrow.

Danish is still searching for an answer a year after watching his father being lynched by a mob at their village near Dadri, western Uttar Pradesh, during the last Id-ul Zuha for alleged cow slaughter and beef storage.

Memories of last 28 September keep playing over and over inside his head but have acquired a particular poignancy this Id-ul Zuha.

4. First Chikungunya Death in Capital as Hospitals Reel Under Viral Crisis

Delhi reported its first death due to chikungunya on Monday, taking the toll from the three mosquitoborne diseases (including dengue and malaria) to more than 10, even as the city’s hospitals continue to be overwhelmed by the influx of thousands of patients.

Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram hospital confirmed the death of a 65-year-old man due to chikungunya, which has assumed epidemic proportions in the city. The viral disease is usually non-fatal but hospitals say they are getting many patients with severe manifestation of the illness, including brain infections.

Clearly, the city has again been caught unprepared for the outbreak and both the Delhi government and the civic agencies must take the blame. CM Arvind Kejriwal, who conducted surprise checks in hospitals last year, is currently in Punjab while health minister Satyendar Jain is away in Goa.

AAP on Monday suspended the primary membership of Bijwasan MLA Devinder Sehrawat after it received “several complaints“ against him from party workers. He is the second MLA to be suspended this month.

The last one to have faced action was sacked minister Sandeep Kumar who has been accused of rape.

Sehrawat had been attacking the party and senior functionaries for a week with allegations that several of them had been indulging in sexual misconduct and exploiting women over distribution of tickets in Punjab.

He had not been able to produce any proof to back his allegations and had gone to Chandigarh on a “fact finding mission“.

On returning from there, he had told TOI that his work was only to “advise the women in distress“. On Sunday , he lashed out at CM Arvind Kejriwal on social media.

7. After LEMOA, it’s War Games Now

As Indian and US troops began to assemble for counter-terrorism exercises in the hills of Uttarakhand from 14 to 27 September, senior officials said they would soon discuss ways to enhance the scope and scale of exercises in tune with the deepening military cooperation.

While this is not the first time it is happening on this location, this is the first military exercise after the two countries signed the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Understanding (LEMOA).

This means that accounting and book-keeping for the exercise will be done under the arrangement which does away with the need for settling bills and payments every time. They will be recorded and cleared every three months.

The bilateral exercise comes against the backdrop of Pakistani media reports that Pakistan and Russia will hold their first joint military exercise later this year. Possible sale of Russian military hardware to Islamabad is on the cards.
