1. 'Garbage Marshals' to Monitor Segregation

To counter garbage contractors’ mafia in the IT city and ensure proper segregation of dry and wet waste, the BBMP will introduce the ‘garbage marshals’ concept, involving local citizens and Resident Welfare Associations.

The concept, as a pilot project, will be tested in a couple of wards from October. Depending on the success of the pilot project, the module will be replicated in all the 198 wards of the city.

Upset over the resurgence of garbage mafia and piling up of garbage across the city during weekends and festive season, citizens have come together to counter the influence of garbage mafia that controls and threatens the administration by resorting to flash strike.

2. Owner of Aadhaar Enrolment Agency Arrested

The Mico Layout police have arrested a 40-year-old man for disposing confidential Aadhaar details in a garbage bin after shutting down his enrolment agency.

Based on a complaint by UIDAI officials, police tracked down CN Venkatesh, a resident of Mico Layout. He was arrested for breach of privacy and also booked under various sections of the IPC.

According to the police, Venkatesh had taken up the contract for enrolment, which expired in May this year. Instead of handing over the documents and the confidential data to the authorities concerned, he reportedly disposed them in the garbage dump near Anjaneyaswamy temple in BTM II stage.

3. 'Airlines Staff Bullied Me Over Kannada'

A Bengaluru-based businessman has alleged that he was not allowed to board a flight he had booked the ticket for from KIA on Wednesday because a person with the airlines took umbrage that the former was speaking in Kannada.

Balaji Narayana Murthy told BM, “My GoAir flight to Mumbai was scheduled from 5.45 am. As it had rained heavily last night, I was late by three minutes by the time I reached the check-in counter. There were 14 other passengers who too had arrived late.”

He said he was talking to an old man standing next to him about what to do next. “A person at the desk shouted at us saying, You cannot speak in Kannada. I will not allow you for doing this.”

4. Karnataka to Build 1 Lakh Homes for the Poor

As Assembly polls are fast approaching, the state government is busy executing several projects. Group housing scheme for the economically weaker sections of the society seems to be the latest. The state cabinet on Wednesday approved construction of whopping 1 lakh houses in and around Bengaluru. Besides, the state cabinet also set a deadline of one-year for the completion of the project.

Law and Parliamentary minister TB Jayachandra said, “As announced in the budget, people from economic weaker section of society will be provided with housing facilities. The cabinet approved a major project of the housing department and 1 lakh houses will be built in a year.” There are demands that government must sanction these houses only to those who hail from Karnataka and not to those belonging to any other states.

5. 2 Men on Bike Abduct Executive, Leave Him Naked

Suresh (name changed), a 30-year-old operations head of a reputed Chennai-based firm, was assaulted, robbed and stripped before being abandoned near Hulimavu Lake late at night last week by two bike-borne robbers. It took him 45 minutes to find his clothes, after which he found help and went to a police station to lodge a complaint.

Suresh, a resident of BG Road, Hulimavu, was attacked and abducted by two armed men around 7.45 pm on Tuesday last week. He was near the Sai Baba temple in Hulimavu when the attack took place. According to his complaint, he was dragged onto the bike between the two men and taken to a lonely place near Nobonagar on the Hulimavu lakebed.

6. Cabinet Clears Public Bicycle Sharing System for Bengaluru

The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) system for Bengaluru. However, Bengalureans will have to wait not less than a year to start pedaling.

The project will be implemented in the city at a cost of Rs 80 crore and will work just like the public bicycle sharing system that was launched in Mysuru in June this year.

“Bicycle riding facilities will be created in MG Road, Vidhana Soudha, Indiranagar, Banaswadi, HRBR Layout, HBR Layout, Kacharakanahalli, Koramangala and HSR Layout for people to cycle distances of 10-15 kms,” Law Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters after the Cabinet meeting. “The PBS in Bengaluru will have 6,000 cycles,” he added.
