1. Fresh Cases of Malaria, Dengue, Congo Fever
The state has recorded a total of 8,322 cases of malaria and 1,452 cases of dengue between 1 January and 9 September. On Monday 9 September, while five cases of malaria were confirmed, as many as 13 cases of dengue were reported.
According to a press release by the state government, in the past fortnight, ten cases of the Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) were confirmed to be positive, of which three are currently undergoing treatment and two have been cured. Five others succumbed to CCHF during their treatment. The latest case to test positive, as of Sunday, 8 September was a 33-year-old man from Jamnagar.

2. CUG Students’ Council Stages Protest, Demands Better Hostel Facilities
After failing to address unresolved issues of the hostel, food, and maintenance despite repeated applications submitted to university authorities, the students of the Central University of Gujarat (CUG) led by the Students’ Council staged a dharna on the university campus in Gandhinagar on Monday, 9 September.
The protest was called off in the evening after a meeting chaired by University Vice Chancellor (VC), S A Bari, assured the students that the issues would be looked into at the earliest.
The protest was staged after the student body had submitted a representation to the university authorities on 3 September. A general body meeting was conducted on 1 September and it was announced that the administration had a week’s time to address the issues.

3. New Fines Likely to Be Announced, No Leniency for the Helmetless
The Gujarat government is likely to announce the enhanced fines under the new Motor Vehicles Act on Tuesday 10 September. The government’s decision is likely to be announced after the transport and police department of the state submitted its report in this connection. A notification regarding the same is also likely to come in a day or two.
The new Act calls for steep fines for violation of traffic norms.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had earlier talking to the media said that he had asked both the department to suggest new rates of fine as the Centre’s norms for fines are the maximum that can be charged from an offender.

4. My Win Was Not by a Narrow Margin: Bhupendrasinh Chudasama in HC
State’s law and justice minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, who deposed before the Gujarat High Court (HC) Monday, 9 September in connection to an election petition challenging his assembly win from the Dholka constituency in 2017, said he would not consider his victory was by a “narrow margin”.
The petition against the senior BJP minister was filed by Congress leader Ashwin Rathod, who alleged that the then Returning Officer (RO) Dhaval Jani had invalidated 429 postal ballots, which led to his loss to Chudasama by just 327 votes.
Chudasama told the court that there are instances in the past where people won by even one vote. Therefore, in this case, he would not term his victory margin as narrow.

5. City Records Highest Number of Attempted Suicides
Four districts of Gujarat that are home to its four major cities have recorded the highest number of cases of attempted suicide. Data shared by the 108 Emergency Service showed that Ahmedabad leads in such cases.
The district recorded 435 calls in which someone attempted sucicide in the year 2018 and by July 2019 it has already received 298 such calls.
Apart from the four major cities a surprising addition is Bhavnagar that saw 141 such cases being reported in the year 2018 . In fact Bhavnagar reported more cases of attempted suicide for both years 2018 and 2019 than Vadodara.
