Home to the renowned Shrewsbury biscuit, Pune’s iconic Kayani Bakery was recently issued a verbal order by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) to shut shop, as it had been conducting business without a trade license since 2006, reported The Times of India.

The bakery’s management however, has claimed that it had been trying to procure a license since 2006 to no avail, as per a TOI report. The PCB told the bakery’s management on Saturday, 14 October, to apply for a new trade license, reported TOI.

Two other renowned eateries on the same stretch in Pune cantonment area – Kwality and Bagban, were also issued a notice by the PCB to shut shop for the same reason. PCB president Brigadier Rajeev Sethi told TOI after a meeting with Kayani Bakery’s owner:

We had a meeting with the (Kayani Bakery) owner and discussed the matter in detail. We have asked them to apply for a fresh trade licence. Thereafter, the necessary action will be taken by the board.

“It’s a Tradition, Not a Bakery Shop”

After the news of the bakery’s closure, many Twitter users wrote posts about their love for the famed bakery and expressed regret at its untimely closure. Moreover, an online petition was started to prevent Kayani Bakery from shutting shop.

One Twitter user even requested Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and External Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to prevent the Kayani Bakery’s closure.
