A day after 21-year-old Hanan Hamid was trolled online, the Kerala police has taken a man from Wayanad into custody for allegedly posting derogatory comments about the girl, reported ANI.

Hamid is a student of Al Azhar College of Arts and Sciences in Idukki’s Thodupuzha who sells fish in the local market to fund her college education and make ends meet.

According to a report in The News Minute, Hamid has been doing odd jobs to sustain her family since she was in Class 7.

Hamid’s story of resilience was featured by a Malayalam newspaper, Mathrubhumi, after which a few applauded her for her grit and determination while a few others trolled her for it.

Online trolls accused Hamid and the media house for using a story like this to merely grab eyeballs.

They went on to say that Hamid was an actor who sold fish in the local market for a total of three days to be in news.

After the girl was subjected to a barrage of online trolling, Hanan found support in Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister KJ Alphons and CPI (M) leader VS Achuthanandan.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Backs Hamid

Praising the girl for her hardwork and putting her life together, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on 26 July, Friday:

“It’s a matter of great pride when one is self-dependent as a student. The satisfaction one gets is immense if they fund their studies with the money they earn. Only those who have gone through such experiences in life will understand it.”

According to a report in The News Minute, Vijayan had asked the Kerala police to take action against the ones trolling her. He had also directed Ernakulam District Collector to provide protection for Hanan.

CPI(M) leader VS Achuthanandan too had demanded action against online abusers.
