Raja Chauhan, a BJP worker, was booked on Tuesday for firing during the Dalits’ protest against the alleged dilution of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in Gwalior on Monday, ANI reported. Images of Chauhan shooting from his firearm had gone viral.
The Bharat Bandh, called by the Dalits on Monday to protest against the Supreme Court’s alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, witnessed deaths and damage to property. Protests were seen across the country in states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Punjab, and even reached Delhi.
The Supreme Court, on 20 March, had introduced the provision of anticipatory bail in the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act saying that there will be no automatic arrest on any complaint filed under the law. However, as the protests turned violent, the government filed for a review petition on Monday itself.
