LS Adjourned Amid Uproar Over Azam Khan’s ‘Objectionable Remarks’

After the uproar in the Lok Sabha on Friday, over comments made by Samajawadi Party MP Azam Khan to BJP MP Rama Devi, Speaker Om Birla met with the opposition leaders of all parties and decided that Khan must apologize.

The women MPs of the BJP in the Lok Sabha, including Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Smriti Irani, demanded an apology from Azam Khan for his objectionable remarks. Irani said, “Let us not reduce this to a problem of just women. This is a blot on all legislators including men.”

Both Houses of the Parliament commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Kargil War on Friday. Rajnath Singh spoke about Kargil Vijay Diwas in the Lok Sabha while a minute of silence in memory of the martyred soldiers was observed in the Rajya Sabha.

Private Member Bill on Euthanasia Introduced in LS

A Bill on euthanasia and another which seeks to abolish the death penalty in India were among the 44 private members' bills introduced in the Lok Sabha today. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi of DMK introduced a Bill for abolishing death sentence in the country, PTI reported.

Lok Sabha Secretariat stated, “Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has been constituted for the term ending on 30 April 2020. Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury (Leader of Congress in LS) has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Committee.”

Meenakshi Lekhi Appointed Chairman of Committee on Public Undertakings

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has appointed Meenakashi Lekhi as the Chairman of the Committee on Public Undertakings for the term 2019-2020. The Committee consists of 15 Lok Sabha members and 22 Rajya Sabha members.
