Mishra has sustained severe injuries in the firing and was shifted to a Patna hospital so he could get better treatment.

Mishra was attacked by assailants while he was exiting a bank with Rs 1 lakh in cash and going towards his home. Two bullets pierced his back and he fell at the spot while the assailants robbed his cash. Onlookers took him to the hospital and informed his family about the shooting, One India reported.

The police also reached the spot along with the family and registered a case against unknown assailants and have begun investigation. Dilip Kumar, the SP of Arwal has called it a case of personal enmity.

According to NDTV, one of the two alleged assailants, Kundan Mahto, has been arrested. His accomplice Ambika Mahto is on the run. Efforts are on to arrest him, the police said.

Pankaj Mishra told NDTV that the men who attacked him were locals and close to Satyadeo Singh, the JD(U) legislator from Kurtha. The arrested assailant, Kundan Mahto, is the son of Mr Singh's personal assistant Anant Kumar Verma.

Pankaj Mishra also told NDTV that he had written against Kundan Mahto several times and so they targeted him.
