Captured Indian soldier, Chandu Chavan has been handed over to the Indian Army by Pakistan.

Earlier in the day, The Pakistan Army issued a statement announcing that it will hand over Sepoy Chandu Babulal Chavan, who inadvertently crossed the Line of Control (LoC) on 29 September 2016 to the Indian Army on Saturday.

In the statement the Pakistan Army said that Chavan’s return to India is a“ gesture of goodwill” aimed at maintaining “peace and tranquility along the LoC.”

The sepoy was handed over to the Indian Army at 3 pm at the Wagah Border in Punjab. After Chavan’s handover he was debriefed and a special medical check-up carried out.

The 22-year-old Chandu Chavan– part of the 37 Rashtriya Rifles– belongs to Borvihir village in Dhule.

On 29 September 2016, he had inadvertently crossed over to the other side of the LoC, raising fears of what fate he might meet in Pakistan due to the ongoing rough patch between the countries.

Chavan’s grandmother had succumbed to a heart attack after the news of Chavan being held captive in Pakistan reached her.
