A Pakistan High Commission official was called by Delhi police for clarification on the evening of Sunday, 13 January, after the official had an argument with a lady at a market in Delhi, ANI reported.

The official later issued a written apology to the woman and was let off.

While the official is not reported to have been arrested, Pakistan government sources told Wion news that he was and that Islamabad strongly protests the alleged violations of the Vienna Convention.

An international treaty that defines a framework for diplomatic relations between independent countries, the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 specifies the privileges of a diplomatic mission that enable diplomats to perform their function without fear of coercion or harassment by the host country. It forms the legal basis for diplomatic immunity.
