Benguluru is not the only city to have a night of shame on New Year's Eve. CCTV footage from Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar showed a drunk mob, allegedly comprising mostly students, attacking the police for intervening when they saw the mob molesting a woman.
The incident took place around 12:30 am on Saturday night when cops standing at a barricade near Batra Cinema saw a mob trying to grab a female who was riding pillion on a motorcycle with two other men.
When the policemen tried to stop the inebriated revellers, they turned against them, attacking and injuring four police peronnel.
News 18 quoted Anil Kaushik, a cop, as saying:
There were some 200 drunk men around and they tried to stop the bike and tried to grab the girl. We intervened and helped the girl get away. We caught two men too. The drunk boys then came back with friends from a nearby restaurant and started pelting stones. We were few in number so we retreated to the Batra chowki. They then attacked the chowki and forced their way in to rescue their friends. They beat us with rods. Several women cops were injured by them too.
An FIR has been registered against unknown persons and preliminary police investigations show that the accused were students preparing for entrance exams, The Indian Express reported. The police are also examining the CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused.
This incident has raised concerns about law and safety in the city since the accused were able to get away after attacking even the police.
Recently, similarly shocking incidents were reported from Bengaluru where groups of men molested women on New Year's Eve.
