Within days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing the policy of demonetisation, an organised racket may have been in action that home delivered new notes from government presses or the central bank, to people's homes.
Income tax and intelligence officials are probing this possibility that came to light after a man in south Delhi was held last month with Rs 20 lakh in the new 2,000 rupee notes. The notes were packed and had the seal of two government presses in Maharashtra and West Bengal.
The man – Krishna Kumar – was most likely a courier who was delivering the money at Greater Kailash-I M Block, when the tax officials arrived.
Two senior Income Tax officials told Hindustan Times that it was the first instance of cash with government press seals appearing among the public.
We need to ascertain where the leak came from. If the printing press or the RBI chest is compromised, those loopholes need to be plugged. We are waiting for the RBI to share more information with us.
