The National Commission for Women took suo-moto cognizance of the murder of S Swathi–the 24-year-old techie from Infosys and wrote to the DGP of Chennai and GM of Southern Railway seeking a report on the action taken so far.
Based on the report, NCW will decide on the further course of action, and if required it will constitute an inquiry committee which will submit its recommendations on the case to the government.
The Madras High Court too directed the Tamil Nadu government to submit a report with regard to the installation of CCTV cameras at important places.
S Swathi was murdered by an unidentified man at a platform in Nugambakkam railway station in Chennai on 24 June in full public view.
The HC said that the gruesome daylight murder exposed the lack of police patrolling and lack of surveillance by CCTV cameras at important places like railway stations.
