Based on the complaint of a senior fire brigade official, police registered a First Information Report against the owner of Navrang Cine Centre in connection with a fire that broke out at the Navrang studio in Todi Mill compound in suburban Lower Parel in Mumbai on 19 January, PTI reported.
The FIR was lodged at NM Joshi Marg police station, said Chief Fire Officer Prabhat Rahangdale of the Mumbai Fire Brigade. The studio had illegally stored huge amounts of celluloid film and scrap which caught fire, the report added.
A senior police official said that a case had been registered under Section 285 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter.
A major fire earlier broke out on the fourth floor of an industrial complex at Lower Parel in Central Mumbai shortly after midnight, an official said on Friday morning.
One firefighter was injured while attempting to douse the fire. The fire was brought under control within hours.
The fire broke out around 1 am at a dilapidated 'Navrang studio' – which was shut years ago – in Todi Mill Compound at Senapari Bapat Marg, he said.
Eight fire engines, seven tankers and an ambulance were rushed to the spot to contain the blaze.
"The studio building is old, unoccupied and precious," the official said, adding that the exact reason of the fire is not yet known.
On 29 December, a fire broke out in the Kamala Mills Compound in the same locality of Central Mumbai in which 14 people were killed and more than 21 injured. All three owners of the Mojo Bistro from the compound, where the fire broke out, are in police custody.
A BMC report that was released on Thursday, 18 January, said that the fire was caused due to the embers flying out from the hookahs that were being illegally served at Mojo’s Bistro Restaurant.
In addition, the restaurant had allegedly partially covered their terrace without authorisation, and had used “all kinds of combustible materials” for the construction of the same.
The 1 Above Restaurant too had, without authorisation, covered its open-terrace with highly flammable material, which they said immediately caught fire from Mojo’s Bistro wall-side and spread all over.
