'Ray of Hope for Downtrodden': Modi, Kovind Congratulate President-Elect Murmu

Congratulatory messages poured in from across the political spectrum as Droupadi Murmu was declared the new president of India, making her the first tribal person to hold the post.

Murmu was declared the winner of the election after crossing the halfway mark with 2,161 votes valued at 5,77,77.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Murmu at her residence to personally congratulate her on her historic victory.

The prime minister also took to Twitter to congratulate Murmu.

"India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President! Congratulations to Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji on this feat," he said.

PM Modi further said, "Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji's life, her early struggles, her rich service and her exemplary success motivates each and every Indian. She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalised and the downtrodden."

Sitting President Ram Nath Kovind, whose tenure is scheduled to end on 24 July, congratulated Murmu, saying, "Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Smt. Droupadi Murmu on being elected as the 15th President of India."

Home Minister Amit Shah called Murmu's victory a "milestone" in the direction of empowerment of the tribal community.

"Coming from a very common tribal family, NDA candidate Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji's election as the President of India is a moment of great pride for the whole country, I congratulate her. This victory is a milestone in the direction of realising the resolve of Antyodaya and empowerment of tribal society," Shah tweeted in Hindi.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated Murmu, saying that she had done a lot for the underprivileged sections of society

"Congratulations to Smt Draupadi Murmu ji for registering an effective victory in the presidential election. She has been active in public welfare in villages, poor, underprivileged as well as in slums. Today she has risen from among them to the highest constitutional position. This is a proof of the strength of Indian democracy," Singh said in a Twitter post in Hindi.

'Hope Murmu Functions Without Fear Or Favour': Yashwant Sinha

Yashwant Sinha, the Opposition's joint candidate who lost the presidential election against Murmu, conceded defeat and congratulated her on her victory.

Taking to Twitter, Sinha said, "I join my fellow citizens in congratulating Droupadi Murmu on her victory in the presidential election 2022. India hopes that as the 15th President of the Republic, she functions as the custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also sent his best wishes to the newly-elected Indian president.

"Congratulations and best wishes to Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji on being elected as the 15th President of India," he said in a post on Twitter.

BJP chief JP Nadda, on the other hand, said that Murmu's victory proves the party's resolve in bringing about the welfare of all sections of society.

"With the goal of Antyodaya, under the leadership of respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, who is involved in nation building with social change, Draupadi Murmu ji's elevation to the highest office of the country today shows that the BJP government is determined for the welfare of every section," he tweeted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had spearheaded discussions among Opposition parties to decide on a joint candidate for the presidential polls, also congratulated president-elect Murmu.

"I would like to congratulate Hon'ble Presidential Elect Smt Draupadi Murmu. The country will sincerely look up to you as the Head of State to protect the ideals of our Constitution & be the custodian of our democracy, especially when nation is plagued with so many dissensions," Banerjee said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had also thrown his weight behind Sinha for the post of president, sent his best wishes to Murmu.

"Many congratulations and best wishes to respected Mrs Draupadi Murmu ji on being elected as the 15th President of the country," the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief tweeted.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar said, "Heartfelt congratulations Droupadi Murmu on being elected as the President of India. My best wishes to you as you prepare to take up the responsibilities and charge of your esteemed office. Wishing you success in your tenure as President."
