3. Lokhandwala to Versova in 15 Minutes

After 20 years and spending Rs 2 lakh on litigation fee in City Civil Court (Dindoshi Sessions Court), Yari Road residents have won a case against Sunderwadi slum-dwellers who were blocking their only access to the rest of the city. Originally 40-ft wide, the arterial road connecting Versova and Seven Bungalows had, over the years, shrunk to 10 feet. Quashing an appeal filed by the slum-dwellers, the court has given the BMC a go ahead to demolish the slum and resettle 44 of the 75 shanties. This demolition drive will give Yari Road residents full access to this Development Plan (DP) road after it’s widened to 120 feet, cutting travel time between Versova and Lokhandwala from 35 minutes to 15 minutes.

In pursuance of the court order dated April 23, the BMC’s assistant engineer (maintenance) from K (West) ward issued demolition notices on May 5. “Within seven days, the slum-dwellers have to indemnify the BMC Rs 200 on stamp paper, and are directed to vacate the existing structures peacefully, failing which they will be removed at their own risk and cost,” said the civic official.
